This half term Kaluuya class have been focusing on developing their creative writing skills ready for their Language Paper 1 mock exam.
All of the students have produced fantastic work but one piece that particularly stood out was this one from Laila. We’ve got some fantastic examples of linguistic devices such as metaphors, wonderful structural decisions such as short and single word sentences and the cherry on the cake is her choice of language with some amazingly powerful and emotional word choices being utilised!
Here you can see a quick ten minute writing exercise she completed in class independently. I love the way she starts in the middle of the action and then refuses to reveal to the reader the details of where the narrator is or why they are there - “The moment I stepped into that room, I knew in my heart that there was no escape. This is hell. I looked around in hopes of an escape – but no, I’m stuck in this hell-hole, drowning in my own thoughts. I was dreading the time I had ahead of me. Time felt never-ending. This was torture.
The moment I stepped in that room, the sense that always lingered began to suffocate me. Dread.
I entered the room with the hopes of being able to sit quietly, peacefully and with my head down, but instead…I walked into a room full of loud, selfish, obnoxious little boys. How am I supposed to do my detention surrounded with people like that? It’s impossible. In that moment, all I wanted to do was punish them, shout at the, do anything in my power to shut them up. But no. All I could do was sit there within my own rage.”
